Oliver Burgham
Rugby League International; Capped for Wales and Great Britain
Oliver Burgham was a Welsh rugby league footballer who played professionally during the first two decades of the twentieth century. During his career he normally played as Prop or Hooker, wearing the number 8, 9, or 10 shirt. He played at club level for Ebbw Vale, one of the oldest clubs in Wales. It was founded in 1879 at the Bridgend Inn, although rugby had been played in the area since 1870. In July 1907 they formed a Rugby League side from the amateur Ebbw Vale rugby union team and joined the professional Northern Union.

The team was closely associated with the local steel works and nicknamed the Steelmen. Oliver Burgham and another 'Steelman' W.E. (Chick) Jenkins played for Wales in the first ever Rugby League International against New Zealand at the Athletic Ground in Aberdare. Wales narrowly won in front of a crowd of 12,000! On 20 April 1908, Burgham and Jenkins won their second caps, together with clubmate W.J. Saunders, in the first Welsh encounter with England. In the 1908-09 season, Ebbw Vale and Merthyr were joined in the Northern Union by Aberdare, Barry, Mid-Rhondda and Treherbert. In addition, a new Welsh League was formed.

Oliver Burgham eventually joined Halifax, where he won a cap for Great Britain against Australia in 1911.
