Palmer's Flat lies north west of Parkend between Milkwall and Coalway. By 1834 a few 18th-cenury and early 19th-century cottages had grown up along the road at Gorsty Knoll and Palmer's Flat, not far from Milkwall. Further encroachments built up between Milkwall and Coalway along this road with the town of Coleford a short distance to the north-west and the industries of Parkend and the surrounding area (coal mining, stoneworks and iron furnaces and forges).
