Robert Allan McConahie (1921-2010)

Bob McConachie (member FF069) passed away peacefully on February 26th 2010 from complications following an auto accident. He had been en route to visit his children in California when the accident occurred. Bob was a grandson of A.T. Burgum who had begun life in the Forest of Dean, in England. He travelled by ship to Portland, Maine, travelling with his family in two covered waggons and finally settling in Arthur, North Dakota. Following the death of his first wife, Ann Harper Bradley Burgum, A.T. married Elizabeth Hall. They had three daughters, Zana, Elizabeth and Frances. Frances, born at Arthur in 1895, married Theodore McConachie and they had two sons, Bob in 1921 and Gordon in 1923.

Bob was very interested in family history, but knew very little about the Burgum family connection and his cousins until the family was visited in Rapid City, South Dakota, in the mid-1930's. He met two of the MacAdam sons on the first visit and, in 1936, met Elizabeth Ann Harper Burgum and her two sons Sandy and Bob Scott. He visited the farm in North Dakota and, later, he and Joyce met more of the family in Califoria. Bob had worked for IBM and did a two year stint in UK, where he met up with Alice Lillie and her daughter Edith, who were on a trip there. He also visited several of the Burgum homes in and around the Forest of Dean. He once had a slate shingle and wooden peg from the roof of the house his great grandmother (Edith Bowery Burgum) had lived in when she later married Thomas Hill. I believe he also had a slate from his Great-grandfather's house in Scotland!

One interesting point is that Ann Harper Bradley Burgum, A.T. Burgum's first wife, was said to have died because of the negligence of a local doctor. Bob told me that his own mother, Frances Burgum McConachie, had died when Bob was just two years old. He had been told that she, too, had died due to negligence - an incorrect diagnosis by a doctor, with Theo walking the streets of Grand Forks for three days looking for him! Whether this is one story attributed to two different women, or two coincidental stories I just don't know.

Bob was a great supporter of the BURGUM FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY and I used to enjoy receiving letters from Bob and Joyce, including news of the family at Christmas time. Bob was very proud of his children Beth, Mary, Bill, Bob, Jon, James, and Karl and their families, who mostly settled in California. A private graveside service was held at Holy Hope Cemetery, Tucson, Arizona, where Bob's wife Ann Joyce was buried in October of 2009.
The picture (right) shows Bob, myself and my son outside our house in the Forest of Dean.
