A.T. Burgum
Anthony Thomas Burgum was born at the Malt House, Weston-under-Penyard, Herefordshire, England, in October 1834. His parents were William and Edith (Bowery) Burgum. He married Ann Harper Bradley at Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham, in 1857. They emigrated to the USA in 1872, settling in Iowa. Sadly Ann died in child-birth and John moved, finally settling in North Dakota.

Elizabeth Hall Burgum (1857-1933)
Elizabeth E. Hall was born in Illinois, USA in July 1857. She move to Arthur, Cass County, North Dakota and married A.T. Burgum on 26th November 1884. Together they had three further children to add to the family; Zana, Elizabeth and Frances.

Joseph Arthur Burgum (1860-1925)
He was the second son of A.T. and Ann (Bradley) Burgum and born at Ruardean Woodside, in the Forest of Dean, in England. He emigrated to the USA with his parents in 1872. He married Jessamine Southern Slaughter at Bismarck, North Dakota, on 23 October 1893. they had met her while she was teaching school in the area. Together they had five children together. They made their home initially at Washburn, ND. By 1900 he was manager of the North Western Elevator Company and later the Arthur Farmers Elevator Company.

Joseph Arthur Burgum (1860-1925)
Joseph Arthur Burgum and family
This picture shows Joseph and Jessamine with four of their five children. They made their home initially at Washburn, ND. By 1900 he was manager of the North Western Elevator Company and later the Arthur Farmers Elevator Company. Joseph Arthur Burgum died in 1925 when his youngest son Joey was just eight years old.

Jessamine Slaughter Burgum (1873-1962)
Jessamine's parents were Major B.F. Slaughter, a doctor who with his wife, Linda Slaughter, came up the Missouri River with Custer's Army and located at Fort Lincoln, near Bismarck, North Dakota. Before marriage, Jesssamine taught school at Painted Woods, near Washburn. She would sometimes ride her pony side saddle to Bismarck, a distance of about 40 miles, and then ride back the same way on Sundays.
In 1893 she was one of the first four students to attend what was the North Dakota Agricultural College, now North Dakota State University, at Fargo. Later she was honoured by having a dormitory, Burgum Hall, at North Dakota State University named for her. She also received the Alumni Achievement Award.
Jessamine also took a great interest in the history of North Dakota. The Burgum Family History Socity has her book Zezula, about the pioneer days in the Smoky Water Country, as well as four books of her poetry.

Benjamin (Frank) Slaughter (1842-1896)
Frank Slaughter was born at Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky, on April 10 1842. He and Linda Wafel were married at Cadiz, Harrison Co, Ohio in 1868. Together they had four children - Roslind, Jessamine, Linnie Lee and Frank Slaughter. Dr Frank Slaughter died at Conking, North Dakota, on December 26 1896.

The Slaughter Family
This picture shows Frank and Linda Slaughter with their three daughters - Roslind, Jessamine, Linnie Lee Slaughter. Frank died at birth in 1872 at Fort Rice. The tiny baby was placed in a coffin in the fort armoury and Linda was distraught. Finally the fort commander ordered that wood should be collected and a fire made to melt the frozen January winter ground on a nearby hill. The hostile Sioux Indians watched as the miltary party left the fort but, out of respect, did not attack. Eventually the ground was thawed enough to bury baby Frank and and Linda and her husband could mourn in peace.
Edith Burgum Farnham (1869-1953)
Edith Elizabeth Burgum was born at Llantillo Crosseny, in Monmouthshire, Wales, on 18th May 1869. She was the daughter of A.T. and Ann (Bradley) Burgum. She married George Benson Farnham November 17 1887 at Arthur, Cass Co, North Dakota. They had eleven children! She died October 21 1953 At Jamestown, Sutsman Co, ND.
